The explanatory text for the CD tracks is very good, easy to follow, very worth while I think. It is a long-term project for me - leisurely taking a year or so to go through all the sections. I certainly don't regret buying it (and the accompanying CDs of course). (I now know what a 'basso continuo' is and the 'sonata form'!) I regret that it leaves out Elgar and Vaughan Williams. For my part, I like it very much: sometimes a bit shallow, but fills in gaps for someone like me who loves music but who realises my own ignorance. For beginners who know little about music I would give it four or even five stars but for people who already know something about 'classical' music, maybe three stars. I was dithering between three and four stars for this book.
